Yellowstone :: Day One Wrap-Up

Boy! Its been a long day of traveling. We left Spokane, WA at 10:00am (Pacific Time) & arrived in West Yellowstone, MT at about 8:45PM (Mountain Time).

Joining Tyler on this adventure are: Grandma Vickie, Papa Duane, Kailey (Sister), & Andrea (Mommy).

The first pit stop on the journey from Spokane to Yellowstone was in Missoula, MT. Missoula is home to the University of Montana and an old friend, John. John and his son Jack (5) met us at the local McDonald’s. We enjoyed a quick bite to eat, soft serve ice cream, and catching up with our old friend. Unfortunately, we had to cut it short because we still had many hours of travel ahead of us.

The next destination of interest was Anaconda, MT. It might have been a town that we would have missed accept in the distance there was a tall tower that stood out like a sore thumb against hills. I (Andrea, The Mommy) quickly pulled out my phone and “Googled” it. It turned out to have a great amount of history and tale to tell. Here is a quote that I found from one site:

an abandoned smoke stack towers over the foot hills, interrupting the landscape proudly like a giant middle finger to the environment. The smelter which once employed ‘the stack’ was demolished in the 80′s and the stack was going to go with it. However, the folks of Anaconda didn’t want to see their beloved stack die with the mining operations and they came together in a glorious display of passion and love and saved the stack from demolition.

It is, undeniably, quite an impressive structure. I’ve read that the Washington monument could fit nicely inside of it. It is also the tallest free-standing masonry structure in the world and was the largest masonry structure of any kind at the time that it was built.

Their efforts were rewarded and the stack is now a state park. Unfortunately, the area around the park has been found to be slightly poisonous and toxic. It’s full of arsenic and other wonderful things. Thus, the park may only be viewed (and not entered) from a less toxic viewing area that is situated in the center of the town. Just as well, I like my parks best when I’m not allowed to enter them for fear of poisoning.

After our stopping in Anaconda to use the restroom and snap a few photos we set our eyes on getting to our final destination. This was mostly accomplished, with the exception of a few more restroom breaks.

Once we were into Yellowstone National Park that’s when the excitement really started. A majority of our sightings were of Elk. They were easier to spot because they were traveling in large herds. We weren’t sure that they were Elk until we confirmed with others and, of course, the internet. Our giddiness came from spotting a Grizzly foraging in a field. He (or she) was difficult to spot at first, but then we realized it was something other than a rock when it started moving. Finally, it’s hump-back gave it away as a Grizzly. The last creature we may have seen is a Buffalo or Bison. It was dark, so I could not confirm or deny if it was real or a statue. We’ll drive past the same spot tomorrow and get confirmation.

So, we’re here. Snuggled into our condo. I should close with saying that snuggling in is necessary as it is snowing like crazy tonight. We are thinking we’ll be lucky if the streets are clear in the morning.

We are so fortunate to be on this adventure! Seeing God’s beautiful country is truly amazing!! Blessed beyond measure, we truly are.

Good night,

Andrea, The Mommy

Fabulous Four: Spring

Oh man! How is the change of seasons going in your neck of the woods?

Here in the Inland NW we've had some wacky weather. Just last week we had these fierce wind storms that brought clouds, hail, snow, sun, well you get the point - you name the weather system and we got it! In fact, because of said storms the state officials extended the deadline for snow tires to be off from April 1st to April 11th.

Then before you know it, the wind storms subsided and the sunshine rolled in. With it, it brought a whole ton of happiness. It's amazing what a little vitamin D can do for you - isn't it? Suddenly everything is new again and you have reason to smile. The kids and I have been taking FULL advantage of the warm rays because the 10 day forecast isn't so chipper.

This weather has had me thinking about why I love Spring so much. To go along with the "four" theme I've created here at the Phifer Four, I have the TOP FOUR reasons Spring is so fabulous:

* Our family loves Spring because it's a time to embrace the outdoors. We've been cooped up for months, so we welcome all the new life we find outdoors. The kids have watched the tulips peek through the dirt and now they are getting ready to bloom. The squirrels are out in constant play. The outdoors is beckoning...

* My coffee order changes. Now, on the days that are sunny, I can order an ICED coffee. Iced coffee is drool worthy in my book. Oh sure I could order an iced coffee in the winter, but I'd spend the rest of the day trying to warm up. In Spring, it's just the treat to keep my cool, calm, and collected. Yum!

* It takes less time to get out the door. During the winter you always need to plan ahead because there are boots, hats, mittens, scarves, jackets, snow pants, etc. In our house, it's all that times four. Once spring hits you can grab a light jacket, flip-flops, and Go!

* Spring if fabulous because it brings renewal. In our family, Easter is a time of reflection on what Christ did for us so many years ago. We are able to look back, examine, and renew our life commitment to honoring that important sacrifice. Other things embody that sense of renewal....grass coming back to life, baby critters, etc. It's all around us.

I hope Spring is as much fun and joyous for you as it is for us!

Thanks for springing by,

Living Fearlessly :: My Mom

My mom, is one of my best friends. Our life lent itself towards that direction from the beginning - being as she was a single mom, raising a daughter, while growing and figuring herself out. We grew up together. We've taken many steps in our lives together. While many mother/daughter duos will find there steps growing farther apart, ours continue to remain close.

Recently, my mom [Vickie], has started a new adventure and I want to share it with you - be encouraged by it!!

Her adventure starts with the threat of losing a job she has had for years. As many people have experienced in our recent economy my mom's company started down-sizing and relocating the bulk of their employees. One of the facilities they lost was her building in the Puget Sound area. Thankfully, she was spared and given the opportunity to work from home. However, there has always been the looming possibility that the company may decide to no longer support tele-commuters. Can you imagine that anxiety?

Well, we all have options in life: be procavtive, reactive, or do nothing at all. My mom, decided to be proactive - I love that about her! She started researching different fields she could train and enter into. Eventually she found herself taking a few weekend courses in the medical field [hang on, people, it doesn't end here]. After all, medical professionals are an invaluable part of our country & there seems to always be a demand for their services.

After getting her feet wet in the medical field she found that while she enjoyed it, it wasn't her passion. She continued to evaluate what her calling was, what her gifts were, and what would fulfill life long dreams?

Within two weeks she had dropped her medical courses and found a new institute of learning: New York Fashion Academy, Seattle.

She is now fulfilling a life-long dream of wanting to design clothing! Already she has begun courses in Draping and Pattern Making. How great is that!? I would love to recognize God's gifting in my life and fearlessly take steps to bring them to fruition.

You can follow her journey at: http://infashionat50something.blogspot.com/

I love you, mom! I'm so proud of you discovering you dreams, gifts, and talents! Keep going, I can't wait to follow you on this journey.

Cheers,

Snowy, Rainy, April morning....

When is snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. Prv 31:21

What a great scripture for this morning. Upon getting out of bed, making my first cup of coffee, and looking out the window I find it is snowing. Five days into April and big white flakes are falling from the sky. What a sight!

Normally, being as it's Monday and all, I would probably feel a little defeated by the snow. Well, lets be honest, those feelings were present at first glance out the window. However, after reading the above scripture I'm reminded of all the provisions God has given me and the Phifer Four. Despite the cold and the yuck - we are warm, we are clothed, and our tummy's full. Fear not, for our life is GOOD!

How are things in your little space of the world? Are you finding warmth in the midst of a storm?

Cheers,
